Just a Little Scary

Last night Dave talked to the guy who built our cabinets and who is staining our doors. Apparently his shop caught on fire last week and 5 of our doors and jams went up in flames! Luckily no one was hurt and his shop is still standing. Our doors have been re-ordered but the ones that burnt up were already finished. Just a minor setback but quite scary. Makes me nervous as I'm doing all of the staining of the remaining woodwork. Lots of combustible materials and fumes but I'm trying to be safe!

Jenna and William

Jenna and William spent part of Labor Day weekend with us. We hung out at the house for a while before heading back to Lincoln to watch the football game.

They were busy checking out everything at the new house. Jenna has claimed a bedroom upstairs as hers and has requsted that it be painted purple (sorry, but it's blue now). They also spent plenty of time testing the doggy door for us.

Jenna is actually helping Will here. She'd put her hand on his head and guide it through so he didn't knock it on the top flap. Then she'd push his butt through. You know, in case he couldn't get through on his own. It was the cutest thing to watch!

We also finger-painted on the front deck. They enjoyed making a mess!

We got our first set of fridge art.

We had a blast with them and can't wait for the house to be done so they can stay with us there! Jenna is super excited about trying out her new room.

Weekend Update

Crazy - a weekend update before the weekend is even over. Sometimes I get things done.

We had a pretty productive weekend. Not much to take photos of but a lot of tasks were checked off or completed.

Dave continued to work on the tile. He grouted and finished the 4-season room and kitchen.

Both look great!

My dad continued to work on the hardwood flooring. The powder room is complete!

Another newel was installed.

Our shower was completed (but not by us - we hired a professional for this one).

Lots done but lots to do!

Boys Will Be Boys

Our friends Erik and Megan brought us dinner Sunday night. They ordered dinner from Mamasitas in Bennet to go. It was quite tasty and we were super grateful. Thanks!

Erik also brought a surprise. I think he and Dave and been dying to do this since the moment our house plans were drawn up.

Yes, that is an army man with a parachute. I'm more concerned with what they are going to be throwing off of the catwalk than what any kids visiting will come up with. I've heard rumors of nerf dart guns and I am scared.

Weekend Update

Nothing like a weekend update right before the next weekend. I blame the slowness on the desire to forget that last weekend ever happened. Let me explain....

Friday started out just fine. I rushed out to the house at 7am to finish the 2 newels my Dad would need for the weekend. Then I came back to the Lincoln house and that's where the problems started. I was locked out of the house. As in sitting on the front step for 45 minutes waiting for the locksmith locked out. Our deadbolt broke again. Yep, again. We just had it fixed (they are too cheap to replace the darn thing) the prior week. I waited for the locksmith, waited for him to fix it and made it to work by 11. It was a rough morning.

Then Saturday arrived. It arrived with a nice suprise. Not only was Joan having a garage sale so we had to have our garage cleaned out (we thought she'd sell our stuff) but we had a flat tire! It took us an hour to change the tire due to a variety of issues. It was a rough start to an early morning.

We made it to Bennet at 9:30 with our fresh new tire.

Luckily, my Dad was already there with reinforcements. My Mom was working and apparently did not have time to make breakfast so Dad had breakfast to go :)

The weekend did get better though. Dad diligently worked on the flooring and installed one of my beautiful newels.

I love how the flooring on the stairs looks! That got me excited when I emerged from the basement.

Dave spent the weekend working on tile.

He got all of the tile in the sunroom done. I'm hoping he'll grout it this weekend so we can officially call a room done. Ok, not done as the woodwork isn't ready, but done enough to move in.
Sunday morning we met one of our new neighbors. Our first snake...

You had better believe I made Dave get on the ground for these photos. There was no way I was sticking my face at that snake's level. The general consensus around here was that it was a bull snake. I'm sure we'll see plenty more of them.

We're Moving Along Now!

We've seen some vast improvements in the house this week. It's actually starting to all come together. Maybe a move-in date of mid-October is reasonable after all.

Our tile guy installed the floor in the shower. No grout yet. We used river rock that has been smoothed down to all one height.

Our electrician was quite busy as well.

Our master bedroom fan/light. I think the boxes in the shade really add something special to it.

Our office fixture.
The dining/kitchen fixtures.

And the light above our kitchen table. This is also the light in the foreground of the picture above. It's quite large and I'm not 100% sure about it yet. But that's what I get for purchasing it online.

Our plans for the weekend include laying more wood flooring (thanks Dad!), installing more tile (go Dave!), and lots more staining, sanding, and finishing for me.

Weekend Update

We managed to sneak in a few house related projects this weekend.

Dave tiled most of the sunroom.

My dad finished installing the hardwood in our bedroom.

What, you don't have a dishwasher in your bedroom?

We also finished the front deck, but wouldn't you know, I didn't take a picture.

I did some staining, but I spent most of my weekend hanging out with these guys.

Yeah, that was a lot of fun too!

Hope you had a great Labor Day weekend!

We Got Furniture!

Remember this post? http://thepoolsbuildahome.blogspot.com/2009/05/we-got-walls.html

Well, Dave and I had another singing and dancing moment last night.

We bought furniture! Yep, adult furniture! We made another trip to Omaha to the Furniture Mart and came home with a receipt and promised delivery date of October 17th!

We scored a shelf and bench for the entry from the garage to the house:

We purchased a king sized bed! No more elbows in the back (or so Dave thinks). Please note that we did not purchase that ugly bedding!

We bought a table and chairs and 2 matching barstools for the bar.

Best of all, we purchased a couch and matching ottoman. This couch actually sits on legs, not bricks, and you don't have to roll onto the floor to get out of it! Imagine that.

I'm not knocking our red couch. We will be proudly keeping it. It will live in the basement though I told Dave he'll have to bring it upstairs when I'm sick because it's so comfortable to sleep on!

We definitely need a few more items. We'd like a couple of chairs and some end tables for the living room, a dresser and night stands for the bedroom and something for the sunroom, but this was an excellent start!
